Shoshin (初心) is a concept in Zen Buddhism meaning “beginner’s mind“. It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, even when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner in that subject would.
I have been working in sustainable agriculture for the past 13 years. I grew up around farming and never thought about making it a profession until after I went to college and realized I liked working outdoors and with my hands more than I cared to be filing TPS reports. I also learned that there was more to farming than just monocropping and spraying down fields with dangerous chemicals, that good food matters and that by growing good food in a natural way you build a stronger you and a stronger community.
